  • What is a guesthouse?

While a typical bed and breakfast (B&B) is a property where both the owners and their guests live under one roof, a guesthouse is a property where the owners or manager live at a separate location from the guests. An inn is typically a bit larger than a guesthouse and usually has a restaurant. Casa Sarandi is a kind of cross between a bed and breakfast, a guesthouse, and an inn.

How do I make a reservation?

The easiest way is to book using the secure booking form on this site (using your credit card or PayPal to make a 30% deposit). Alternatively you can send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it with your requirements. We are usually very fast to answer email and will always answer within 24 hours unless our auto-reply says differently. You can also call +598 2 400 6460. Please note Uruguay is -3 UTC.

What if I want to stay for just one night?

Casa Sarandi's minimum stay policy is two nights. Minimum stay requirements may be reduced for reservations made within one week of arrival. However, we try to be flexible. Please contact us regarding availability and rates for exceptions to the requirements. One-night stays (if available) are subject to higher rates.

    Do you serve meals?

We do not serve meals. There is a kitchen in the guesthouse that is at the disposition of guests. We ask that you respect other guests by leaving it as you found it. There are some excellent upscale restaurants in the neighbourhood eg Rara Avis which is just one block away. During the week there are numerous lunchtime eateries serving delicious home-cooked food catering to the business community. There are also several very cheap takeaways.

Do you cater for people with disabilities?

Unfortunately the entrance and the sometimes temperamental 1940s elevator mean we regretably cannot offer accomodation to people in wheelchairs. We are very sorry about this. We have very good contacts within the disability movement in Uruguay and can put people with other disabilities in contact with Uruguayan sign-language interpreters, personal assistants and other types of services. Please note that in general those services are for Spanish speakers.

    Do you allow smoking?

No, absolutely not inside the guesthouse.

    Do you allow pets?

    Sorry, we don't.

What times are check-in and check-out?

Check-in time is after 2 pm and check-out time is before 12 noon.

Check-in is by appointment. Appointments may be scheduled between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m.   As we do not have staff onsite and out of courtesy to our other guests,  we do not accept any check-ins that are before 9 am or after 9 pm. We'll do our best to make things easy.

Standard check-in is 2 pm at Buenos Aires 558 for the guesthouse and the same time at Sarandi 493 apt 101 for the Loft. You can arrange to leave bags with us earlier if prior-arranged by email or telephone.

Why do you need more details about arrival than most hotels?

Check-ins are done by appointment because the guesthouse is very small and there are no staff onsite.

Please provide your airline or other arrival information so that we may know approximately when to expect you. Should you encounter any delay or change, please inform us of your revised schedule.

    Do you have laundry services?

No we don't but there is a very good laundry we use ourselves close by. A load washed and dried costs apx 5 USD.

    Do you provide internet access?

Yes we do. Casa Sarandi has free wireless connectivity in every room. We also have a desktop computer our guests are more than welcome to use.

How can I make long-distance calls?

You can receive calls on the guesthouse phone and also make calls to any fixed line in Uruguay free of charge. It's possible to purchase international phonecalling cards at reasonable rates.

What if I want to exercise?

If you run, the Montevideo rambla (promenade) is just one street away. There you have 25 kilometres of unbroken promenade. Run to the West towards the port or run towards the east and quaint Montevidean neigbourhoods of Parque Rodo, or if you're really fit you'll get to plush Pocitos beach.

Where can I find good information about Uruguay in English?

Uruguay is still one of the great undiscovered destinations and not a lot is available. However a great new site has just opened up called UruguayNow. Another good resource, specialised in rural tourism is www.recorriendouruguay.com.uy

What forms of payment do you accept?

The easiest way is to book using the secure booking form on this site (using your credit card or PayPal to make a 30% deposit). You can also make a deposit or wire transfer to a bank in the USA or Uruguay.

Please be prepared to pay the outstanding amount on arrival in cash (USD or Uruguayan pesos). We also accept VISA credit cards.

    What is your cancellation policy?

Cancellations must be made at least seven days (one week) prior to check in. You will receive a full refund (less transaction charges).

Because of the uncertainty involved in filling rooms on short notice, patrons canceling reservations after the acceptable period will lose their deposit. However we will credit you (less charges) if we are able to re-let your room for the original reservation period.

Please be courteous enough to inform us immediately of a cancellation or change in plans. Thank you so much!
