About Us

 In Montevideo Casa Sarandi is

In the heart of the Old City

Our guests who arrive by car, park it (there is a garage 1 block away) don't touch it for the next week. Public transport is also frequent and cheap. We are immediate walking distance to tens of galleries, museums, bars and restaurants.

  • 1 minute walk to the main Colonial Square

  • 2 minutes to the Solis Theatre (Uruguay's most prestigious yet with accessibly priced tickets)

  • 3 minutes to the Plaza de Independencia and the principal commercial street 18 de Julio

  • 5 minutes to the 25 kilometre rambla on the River Plate, perfect for running and biking

  • 15 minutes walk from the infamous Mercado del Puerto for massive meaty lunches

  • 5-10 minute taxi rides to numerous carnival venues. Montevideo has the world's longest carnival. It goes on for 40 nights (more if it rains) from January 24 in 2013 until early March

  • 15 minutes by taxi to the Bodega Bouza vineyard

Many of our guests use Montevideo as a base to see a good portion of Uruguay. Buses are cheap, comfortable, bookable by phone and even have wifi. We are close to:

  • lovely beach-town Atlantida (1 hour by car or bus)

  • nostalgia-steeped seaside town Piriapolis (1 ½ hours)

  • glitzy Punta del Este (2 hours)

  • the UN heritage site Colonia (2 ½ hours)

We love Montevideo

There's very little information available about Montevideo and Uruguay. We have lived in Montevideo for more than a decade and will show you why Montevideo is one of Latin America's best kept secrets. There's a lot happening but you need to know where – it's not obvious.

When you check in we will give you a personal orientation to the city and a guide we've produced in English and Spanish based on our experience.

And every day we will make recommendations to you about local events, music shows, football games, dance, tango, great places to eat, etc based on your preferences. We are especially into music –which is incredible in Uruguay.

About your hosts

Karen and Sergio have been living in Montevideo since 2000. Karen is Welsh and Sergio is from the Argentine interior.

We set up Casa Sarandi because we travel widely for work and pleasure and we love to stay in places that are not impersonal hotels. Casa Sarandi was inspired by B&Bs in South Africa --where Karen worked for more than a decade-- which are warm, beautifully decorated and each very unique. In the fine Welsh tradition, Karen also is a musician.

What people say about Casa Sarandi Guesthouse

“Casa Sarandi was a wonderful place to stay in Montevideo. Each room is unique, with a comfortable queen bed, fantastic sheets and beautiful art. The bathrooms are modern and airy. Our favorite thing was to sit with a coffee, enjoy the views and the street life.” - guest from Vancouver, Canada

“The location of the guesthouse is perfect. The room was comfortable and charming with a balcony. The house was beautiful with a furnished kitchen. I loved this place...” - guest from San Francisco, USA

"The guesthouse is very lovely and comfortable. It is spotless and full of wonderful natural light. The kitchen is well equipped and we used it constantly. It is very centrally located with lovely restaurants nearby. We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again." - guest from New York City, USA

" The guesthouse is located in the heart of the Ciudad Vieja, near stores, cafes, and restaurants. The Peatonal Sarandi is only a few steps away, where you can find anything: artesans' market almost everyday, bookstores, bars, pubs, and hairdressers! The bus stop is just two blocks away and you can reach most parts of the city from there." - guest from Oxford, UK

"I booked directly through their website and got a very quick, extremely friendly response. Karen and Sergio don’t live in the apartment but will meet you on arrival and are always available by telephone (provided in apartment) or email. Karen sat down with me and made all sorts of great recommendations on activities in and around town. I loved my room at Casa Sarandi, but it is the interaction with the owners that stands out as the best part of my stay in Montevideo. They are amazingly friendly without being even slightly intrusive." - guest from Madison, USA

"My husband and I spent part of our honeymoon at the Casa Sarandí and we could not have been happier with our experience." - guest from Rochester, USA

"The place is excellent for those being tired of standard hotels and are curious city explorers. If ever travelling to Montevideo we would come back to Casa Sarandi." - guest from Amsterdam, Netherlands

"In Karen and Sergio you have hosts who are totally at your service and who - with their brilliant guestpack - have gone to extraordinary lengths to ensure you'll have a truly memorable time in Montevideo." - guest from London, UK

What people say about the Loft

“The loft itself is amazing! You can not beat the location (RIGHT on the main pedestrian street in Montevideo's Ciudad Vieja). And once inside, it is like a little paradise in the middle of the city. Large, clean, airy, and very light. The bed was super comfortable (I slept so well). 5+++ stars.” – guest from San Francisco, USA

“ The Loft is really very well located, at very few steps from Teatro Solís, Baar Fun Fun, Museo Torres García, and very few blocks from Mercado del Puerto. It was such a nice experience going in and out, with the keys of "our" flat, very different from staying in a hotel room.” – guest from Sao Paulo, Brazil

“We stayed in the Loft - a lovely one bed apartment right on the main pedestrian thoroughfare in Montevideo - Sarandi. The room is big and stylish - those big windows are fab. But what makes this, over and above the location and space, is the brilliant support you get from Karen. Her recommendations made our trip (they have a great little guide - better than any of the kindle/on line guides available). Spare the Radisson for cocktails at sunset, and stay here instead.” - guest from London, UK
